Essentially, there is no progress at the Security Council. The US Department of State today issued a statement commenting on UN Security Council discussions yesterday, due to continue today. Here are the comments of US Ambassador to the UN John Danforth,
"The information we have is that the situation in Darfur is not getting better, it's getting worse. While there is improved access for the NGOs [nongovernmental organizations] to provide relief, the fact is that the security situation is deteriorating. The government has not acted to disarm the Jingaweit," the ambassador said.If the security situation has not improved, Danforth told journalists, "that is the worst of all worlds because various areas where people congregate become traps, magnets for the vulnerable, and magnets for those who would abuse the vulnerable."
Danforth said that the U.S. delegation has "put the finishing touches on yet another version of a resolution" and representatives of the other 14 Security Council nations are scheduled to review the draft July 22. The ambassador added that he expected the resolution would be formally presented to the council during the week of July 26.
"It's a true humanitarian disaster and it's the responsibility of the government of Sudan. They created this monster; they have said that they are going to correct this situation. They have not done so," Danforth said. "The attention of the world has to be focused on the government of Sudan and we have to hold the government of Sudan accountable."
