The government of Sudan rejected the suggestion of British troops assisting in Darfur:
"The increase in pressure from the United States and Great Britain is ... the same as the increase in pressure that they put against Iraq," Foreign Minister Mustafa Osman Ismail said at a news conference in Paris."If he is going to send troops to Darfur, we will withdraw our troops and give him a chance to maintain security," Ismail said.
"You know what is going to happen in one or two months, these troops are going to be considered by the people of Darfur as occupying forces, and you'll have the same incidents you are facing in Iraq."
Aljazeera.net reports that "Sudan has said deployment of British troops in Darfur would amount to occupation.."
Ismail also said that "more than 60%" of the population in Darfur were against the rebels and that the Khartoum government was doing its best to disarm the militias.
This of course is contrary to the mountain of direct reports as well as leaked documents that confirm that the government and the mililtias are working as one.
