Friday's editions of the "Washington Post", the "Los Angeles Times", the "New York Sun", and the UK's "Guardian" all have stories about ICC chief prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo planning to announce next week that he will seek an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity. (The UK's "Times" also has a similar story, but it may not have made it into Friday's print edition, while the "New York Times" and the co-owned "International Herald Tribune" have a related feature story.)
See also AFP ("ICC prosecutor to seek arrest of Sudan's Beshir", "US warns Sudan against retaliation amid arrest bid for Beshir", and "Sudan leader's arrest harmful to peace: China's UN envoy"), Bloomberg, ITN, UK's "Telegraph", DPA, BBC ("Sudan 'crimes charges' worry UN" and "Sudan angry at threat of charges"), AP ("Sudan dismisses probe of alleged crimes in Darfur" and "Sudan president expected to face war crime charges"), Reuters ("ICC prosecutor likely to seek arrest for Bashir" and "Sudan aid staff fear violence if Bashir indicted"), CNN, VOA ("Concern Arises Over Implications of New ICC Indictments on Darfur", "Sudan’s Ambassador to the UN Criticizes International Criminal Court", "US Warns Sudan Against Retaliation for Genocide Charges", and "Concern Grows at UN for Peacekeepers, Staff in Sudan"), Al-Jazeera ("Sudan president in dock over Darfur" and "Sudan condemns Bashir arrest plans"), Press Association, PBS "NewsHour", UK's Channel 4, Kenya's "Nation", CBC, Xinhua, Canwest, Inner City Press, and Press TV stories from over the course of Friday concerning both the basics and some subsequent developments/responses; as far as stories from Saturday newspaper editions go, see reports from the UK's "Guardian", the UK's "Independent", the "Scotsman", and the "Financial Times" (with the UK's "Times" story mentioned above apparently also ending up in Saturday's edition).
(Updated originally to note both the second AP story and a newer version of the first, as well as to note the one from CNN and the [first] one from VOA; in addition, today's "Terrorism and Security Daily Update" from the "Christian Science Monitor" summarizes many of the primary stories, and Save Darfur has released an official statement. Updated further to note newer versions of both AP stories and the first from Reuters, as well as to note the second from AFP and the [first] one from Al-Jazeera; in addition, Reuters' Global blog now has a related post, and I forgot to mention earlier that UN Dispatch has a couple of posts on this. Updated still further to note newer versions of both [of the first] AFP stories and the second from the AP, as well as to note the ones from the Press Association, PBS "NewsHour", the UK's Channel 4, and Kenya's "Nation"; in addition, HRF has issued a related press release. Updated yet again to note both a newer version of the first AFP story and the brand-new third one. Updated even further to note the brand-new second VOA story. Updated still further both to note a newer version of the DPA story, as well as to note the ones from the CBC and Xinhua. Updated still further to note newer versions of the second AFP and second AP stories, as well as to note the brand-new second BBC story; in addition, the aforementioned UN Dispatch has yet another post on the reports and the SSRC site has a related new special section. Updated yet again to note a newer version of the first AFP story, as well as to note the third VOA story; in addition, AI has a new backgrounder and I forgot to mention earlier that there was a related "Washington Post" online chat earlier today with HRW's Richard Dicker. Updated even further to note the brand-new fourth VOA story, the brand-new second Al-Jazeera story, the new Canwest one, and the ones from Saturday's "Guardian", "Independent", and "Scotsman"; in addition, see both an analysis/op-ed item by Adam LeBor for the UK's "Times" and a "Comment Is Free" post by Jonathan Steele of the "Guardian" [apparently not in the print edition]; finally, the Sudanese embassy in Washington has just issued an official statement. Updated still further to note both the new Inner City Press story and the one from Saturday's "Financial Times". Updated one last time [definitely, at least for tonight] to clean up some of the story references in the earlier update mentions and to note the new Press TV story. [I likely won't be able to mention additional items over the weekend, and possibly into Monday.]) - EJM
