Responding to comments made by the United Nations [head of peacekeeping], Jean-Marie Guehenno, that excessive demands from the Sudanese Government ‘would make it impossible for the mission to operate’, Liberal Democrat Shadow Foreign Secretary, Michael Moore MP, said:
"With only a month to go until the hybrid force’s expected deployment, this stark assessment by the UN shows the Sudanese Government’s determination to defy the international community and thwart any possibility of peace.
"We have been in this position before, so the Security Council should have been prepared for Khartoum’s stalling tactics. The key now is for the Security Council to unite and to make clear that further delay by the Sudanese will not be tolerated.
"With only one month to go until the peacekeeping force takes over, the Security Council must also ensure that the force is fully staffed and funded. The British Government ought to be contributing more than one soldier - even if he is a very senior one."
